Rainy Day Women

I suspect that every once in a while, most women have the kind of day when they feel like everyone and everything in the universe is out to get them. And never is this sense of  impending doom and paranoia more likely to plague me than on a day that involves the DMV. From the four-hour wait to the sour young lady at the window who snarls at me menacingly, and speaks to me in a tone so harsh and condescending, it would make a houseplant wilt. She tells me I don't have all the requisite documentation for her to process my request, never you mind that I called ahead to ask for a list of everything I would need to bring along. I offer to wait at the window while the husband runs home to retrieve said document; after all, we live but a minute down the street. Without so much as looking up to acknowledge our request, she tells us we must get back in the now mile-long line and wait our turn again. She then proceeds to turn her back to us, and to nobody in particular, makes a shockingly rude and downright obscene remark, in a language she doesn't realize I speak fluently. I cringe and sigh.view more

This summer has been significant for me in more ways than one. About a week ago, my husband and I celebrated our one year wedding anniversary which, I can now admit out loud, was as much a surprise to me as it was a joyous occasion. I'm not sure just how typical my experience is, but from where I stand, in spite of all the love, trust, and good intentions two people bring to the table, the first year of marriage is really quite enough to drive them both up the wall. Suddenly, things you once found endearing or, at least, tolerable, now rub you the wrong way with ever-increasing abrasiveness. Unsoaked dishes, little quirks, wet towels on the bed... and you begin to realize, the most important thing that keeps a marriage afloat, at least in its infancy, is not love, but patience. Oodles of it. Great, big, heaping truckloads.junior prom dress

The verdict? It wrinkles after a few hours of sweating, sitting and squirming, but other than that, it is by far the most beautiful dress I have ever put on.

Forgive me, dear readers, as I am still stumbling about this whole blogging business somewhat awkwardly, trying to get back into the groove of things. Just for giggles, let's dive right in, shall we? In the time that I've been gone, a curious thing has happened. Nine out of ten days, I have been reaching for whites. Long-time readers of this blog might recall how unusual it is for me not to drench myself in color. When I realized how I had been dressing for these past few months, the annoyingly over-analytical side of me got to work. I am still mad about color, and have been buying lots of it- just not wearing much. The only answer I could come up with that made any sense, was that I was subconsciously reaching for tranquility. My days overburdened with duties and my mind cluttered with un-inspiration, I just wanted some quiet time. And because I am an emotional dresser, well...you catch my drift.view more
